Letterpress Basics

Join instructors Bridget Elmer of The Southern Letterpress, FL, and Kaitlin Crockett of Oma Darlin on Sunday, August 26th, 2018 from 12pm-5pm for our one-day Letterpress Basics workshop. 

This 5-hour crash course will introduce students to letterpress printing from handset type and photopolymer plates. We will cover the foundations of letterpress including typesetting, ink mixing, makeready, and press operation on our flatbed and table top platen presses. At the end of the workshop, students will leave with a set of 4 coasters that they designed and printed, as well as a collaborative poster, plus the skills and knowledge to work independently in the print shop.

Students who complete this course will be eligible to rent studio time at PRINT ST. PETE Community Letterpress to work on their own projects. Studio rental rates are $15/hour unassisted, $25/hour assisted.

$150 - all supplies & tools included. Limited seating. Pre-registration & payment are required to reserve your seat.

Join us at Print St. Pete Community Letterpress for an Intro to Book Structures workshop, Sunday April 22nd, 2018 from 2pm-4pm.  In this 2-hour workshop, instructors Bridget Elmer and Kaitlin Crockett will provide students with an introduction to handmade book structures.

Topics covered include:
- The basics of paper including grain, folding properties, weight, texture, finish & color, as well as how to select the appropriate paper based on your project.
- The basics of binding tools including bone folders, awls, needles, book thread, x-acto knives, scoring boards, cutting mats, paper knives, book cradles, book press, etc. 
- How to make 3 basic book structures including one-page books, pamphlet stitch, and accordion books. As we create the different book structures, we will explore the possibilities of each form, including content and structural elements.

Students will also have the opportunity to browse our growing collection of artists books for inspiration. By the end of this class, students will have the skills to create their own handmade book structures. This class is perfect for writers, artists, illustrators, zine makers, and book enthusiasts. $45 - includes paper & tools. Paper Marbling workshop with Kaileen Schleith

Join us at Print St. Pete Community Letterpress for a Suminagashi paper marbling workshop on Sunday Apr. 8th with local designer and illustrator, Kaileen Schleith!

Suminagashi, which translates to "ink-floating", is an ancient Japanese technique of floating ink on water to create marbleized textures. After an image is created on the water, the image is "printed" onto a piece of rice paper by laying it on the surface of the water. You can either create mesmerizing concentric circles or psychedelic swirling textures. In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn the basics of Suminagashi paper marbling using sumi ink, rice paper, brushes and a water tray. Limited seating.

$45 - all supplies included. Pre-registration and payment are required to reserve your seat.

Kaileen Schleith is a printmaker, illustrator and graphic designer, currently residing in Tampa, Florida. She works both in digital and traditional media, utilizing printmaking and painting to create textures for her digital illustrations.

Learn the art of letterpress printing with Kaitlin Crockett of Oma Darlin in this Letterpress Thank You Card workshop at Print St. Pete Community Letterpress on Sunday March 4th (2pm-4pm).

In this 2-hour workshop, students will print a set of thank you cards, as well as learn to create envelope liners using decorative paper.  Students will receive an introduction to letterpress printing, including demonstrations on typesetting, composition, lock-up, registration, and inking.

Students will leave with a set of 8 printed cards and complimentary envelopes with decorative liners. There’s no better way to say thank you than with a beautifully printed card! Limited seating.

In this 3-hour workshop, you’ll learn the basics of hand lettering with chalk, while practicing on this no-pressure medium (because everything erases!) Topics covered include:

In this Paper Marbling workshop on Sunday October 8th (1 pm - 4pm) at PRINT ST. PETE Community Letterpress, local artist, Megan Bailey Eli, will explain the science and art behind Suminagashi, the Japanese technique of marbling paper. She will begin with a demonstration of the process for small and large pieces. Each student will then have the opportunity to create his or her own piece as the instructor circulates around the room, allowing the students to work individually with her. This workshop provides knowledge about a unique artistic process, gives the students a therapeutic experience working with the medium, and results in at least one frameable piece that each participant can take home. In addition, students will be able to check out the letterpress studio, learn more info about other workshops & studio rental opportunities, and purchase original letterpress goods.

Cost is $60/person. All materials included.

: Visiting Artist Bio :

Megan Bailey Eli is a local artist who was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida. She studied literature and writing at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. After graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in English in 2011, she worked as a writer, editor, and private tutor and has participated in literature and writing workshops at Cambridge University and New York University. Megan continues to write short fiction pieces. In 2015, she earned her RN license and worked as a nurse for a brief period then returned to the field of education as a tutor at Advanced Learning Center. Megan creates hand-marbled paper through a Japanese process called suminagashi. She began marbling paper as a therapeutic activity to deal with the stress of working in the hospital environment. It quickly turned into a passion, and Megan began selling her artwork, which also includes geometric watercolor paintings, collages, and illustrations, with the St. Pete Indie Market and Tampa Indie Flea in a homemade teepee. She will continue to promote education, the arts, and literature within her community.

Fall Succulent Centerpiece and Letterpress workshop with O'Berry's Succulents

Join O'Berry's Succulents and Print St.Pete Letterpress for an interdisciplinary workshop where we celebrate fall!

O'Berry's Succulents founder, Jamie O'Berry will guide you in crafting a fall centerpiece using flora and succulents that's inspired by our favorite witchy, gold dust woman, Stevie Nicks. The class will also include a "how to keep succulents alive" lecture.

In addition, Kaitlin Crockett (oma darlin) of Print St. Pete will introduce students to the basics of letterpress printing. After receiving an introduction to the type and equipment, students will get to crank out a set of five festive fall letterpress notecards (envelopes included).

One seat per ticket. Seating is very limited. No refunds, but the ticket can be exchanged for another class up to two weeks before the workshop.

Join us for Paper & Pints at PRINT ST. PETE Community Letterpress, featuring visiting artist and author Sheryl Oring. Not only will you get a friendly introduction to letterpress printing, but Sheryl will discuss her ongoing “I Wish to Say” project in which she sets up a mobile office - complete with a manual typewriter - and invites the public to dictate postcards to the President. Oring started the project back in 2004 and has typed more than 3,000 postcards to the White House from more than 80 locations around the country. In this workshop, she’ll share her working methods and invite local residents to create a pop-up “I Wish to Say” office. Oring is the editor of Activating Democracy: The I Wish to Say Project, a new book published in Fall 2016 by the University of Chicago Press and she’s currently working on a public art commission called “Greetings From Tampa Bay” for the Tampa International Airport. It's a great chance to scope out the studio and learn more about our Letterpress Basics workshops and studio rental opportunities. We'll also have letterpress goods for sale by Oma Darlin' Press and The Southern Letterpress. This event is FREE, with a suggested $3/beer donation. Paper & Pints with Ringling College Galleries

Join us for Paper & Pints at PRINT ST. PETE Community Letterpress. For this extra special session, we are partnering with Ringling College Galleries to celebrate their upcoming exhibition FIFTEEN MINUTES: HOMAGE TO ANDY WARHOL, which will be open from February 20-March 18, 2017 at the Willis Smith Gallery on the campus of Ringling College of Art and Design.

At this free event, we will be letterpress printing a limited edition of Warhol-inspired coasters, designed by Ringling College student Tim Hunt. Each visitor will get a friendly introduction to letterpress printing while enjoying a local craft beer (by donation and only for those of age, of course!). It will be a great chance to scope out the PRINT ST. PETE studio and learn more about our Letterpress Basics workshops and studio rental opportunities. We'll also have letterpress goods for sale by Oma Darlin', and The Southern Letterpress, and plenty of information to share about the upcoming exhibition at Ringling College Galleries!
