PLEASE NOTE: THIS WORKSHOP IS SOLD OUT.
Join us for Casual Lettering with Sun Signs at Print St. Pete Community Letterpress on Sunday, September 23rd, 1-4pm, with instructor Jeff Williams, of Sun Signs + Lettering. Jeff has been working with signs and designs since 2015. His aim is to preserve a classic aesthetic through traditional sign painting techniques which create timeless signs that help clientele identify who they are and what they specialize in.
This workshop will be an introduction into casual brush lettering with an emphasis on single stroke lettering. We will discuss the difference between type, fonts and lettering as well as a brief history of sign painting in North America.
Instructor, Jeff Williams, will start out with a demonstration on how to draw casual letter forms with a pencil and explain what and how scratch lettering is applied.
Next we will review the materials needed:
Mahl Stick (optional)
Then, Jeff will demonstrate how to palette and paint basic brush strokes and how to layout guidelines.
Students will then begin practicing basic strokes with a row of vertical, horizontal, and curved strokes while focusing on a consistent lean. We will then cover how these strokes are the basis of an alphabet.
Next, students will begin painting their alphabets using a reference chart. Once they are comfortable with the brush in hand we can begin to explore variations of casual lettering (Upright, Slant & Thick and Thin).
The remainder of the class will be spent practicing alphabets and forming words to create original paper signs.
Each student will be provided the materials needed for the course. The cost of this workshop is $75.00.
*Note: If you would like a Take Home Kit of supplies to practice at home there after, please select the "Workshop + Take Home Kit" option when registering ($100). The kit includes a pad of paper, brush, yard stick, personal tube of paint, and two hand-drawn casual alphabet reference charts!
